Sifu game review
Sloclap

After the launch of the game Absolver, developer Sloclap is also working on a new project that we know very well, as he returns again with the game Sifu, the title focuses on hand-to-hand combat but with a clear narrative and structure, it will be released on February 8, 2022 for PS4, PS5 and PC via the Store Epic Games, but recently some critics and creators had the chance to take part in a special demo of the game to see how perfect it is and in this regard, we decided to take their impressions of the game and gather them in one place, so here are some things you should know about Sifu.

The story

Sifu’s story is multi-layered and somewhat branched, but it is presented in a straightforward way. Your family has been killed and you need to avenge it. Five responsible killers and each have their own set of enemies and there are some infantries who will try to stop you. The objectives play a very important role in reality and justify the reason for the multiplicity of places and battlefields The levels are somewhat linear in nature which helps keep the pace and unlike Absolver there is no Online mode, you can engage your friend in his quest for revenge as all the targets involved are eliminated.

With this in mind, Sifu has some similarities to rogue-lite games, there is a Detective Board that is open from the start and provides information on each objective and as you adventure into each new level, new clues and details will be added.

Training and fighting

Before proceeding to take revenge on your family, practice is the key. Reaching the wooden training dummy at your base will unlock a virtual dojo to compete against AI opponents, you can set the opponent’s behavior to ‘Negative’ to test different combinations of battalism or ‘Aggressive’ to test Some real pains and how they affect Sifu which is useful for practicing correct dribbling timing.

For actual combat, there’s a lot to like here, as in any game you have a “light” attack and a “heavy attack”, pressing the correct combination of these buttons will trigger a set of specific movements, such as multiple hits that deal massive damage or a round kick aimed at the head, there special moves such as sweeping an opponent and then attacking them on the ground, which create other moves to either push the enemy away or throw them in a certain direction (or at other enemies); Dribbling is the most important thing here in front of enemy attacks.

Everything will make you unexpectedly in tune. Attacks have weight and influence behind them, and it all varies depending on whether you hit your enemy hard or are blocked. Enemies can also be hit on walls which are things that cause inevitable damage and create an opportunity for more pain for your enemies there. Also, some help, pressing the L2 button (for example) slows down the time a bit and this allows for some powerful attacks (smashing the opponent’s face), this makes the fighting style diverse and in fact we will repeat it it offers more than we expected.

Weapons in Sifu

It’s often the weapons where they come in that make the difference. You have pipes, bats, and blades that inflict heavy damage to enemies’ health and body structure itself, greatly impeding movement, but sometimes, it’s ideal to pick up a bottle and smash it into the enemy’s head.

Throwing guns is also smooth, but even if there’s nothing around you can kick footrests and other environmental objects at enemies from a safe distance so if fists don’t seem to work, try looking nearby for any weapon or sharp objects to help you in getting rid of the crisis that may befall your hero.

Structure bar is a strong and weak point at the same time

Besides your health bar, there is a Structure (or Energy) meter like in Sekiro, this meter accumulates when damage is done or attacks are blocked, putting in some strong hits and avoiding will build it up very quickly, once the Structure bar is broken by the opponent You can use some dribbling this helps to recover a small amount of health and is useful during longer runs However, enemies can also break your Structure bar if you are not careful.

Unfortunately, attacks cannot be customized

Another aspect that Sifu shows is a fork of Absolver is that moves are not customized, while new abilities can be unlocked, you can’t modify individual moves to be executed in custom sequences and as such, the goal is to focus on mastering Pak Mei’s martial arts-based fighting style. (One of the legendary Five Elders, a survivor of the destruction of “Shaolin”) In addition to building your own style with different skills and stats.

Upgrades

When you defeat enemies and get XP, your character can gain different skills, attacks like 360 Swing Focus allow to eliminate many enemies when using a stick while the idea of the Thigh Cut attack is to cut the enemy thigh with a weapon or blade meaning more clear and precise, one of the moves includes for example Distinguished ability that helps keep track of the opponent who has been pushed and dropped; While Raining Strikes relies on a series of quick punches, you also have useful skills like catching thrown objects, Duck Strike making your hero move forward and so on.

Each skill can be unlocked before it can be used but requires additional experience to unlock it permanently while running. While running, you can also unlock certain ‘Statistical Upgrades’ from shrines such as increasing the Structure Bar, restoring extra health after eliminating an enemy, and returning the death counter to zero. etc. Not everything is related to XP, some Statistical Upgrades may require a certain score to unlock experience, skills and Statistic Upgrade options have not been fully modified yet, so it is possible that some things may change in the final game.

Enemies

There is a good variety of enemies, many of them were very common and present in the game, not skilled in combat but more than capable of taking their opponent in any fight, however, more and more unique enemies start to appear quickly and upon entering for example into a club Sending in some less clever jerks, you can instantly battle a rather nimble opponent who specializes in low kicks and dribbling, so pay close attention (when the game comes out of course).

Another threat to watch out for is an enemy worthy of killing you, when you eliminate an enemy, whose Structure has been depleted (using Takedowns or Elimination moves), they can only try and persevere to kill you and suddenly gain more Health and Structure while glowing in color Yellow, which deals more damage to your hero during these things. It was also mentioned that these enemies are very specific and you won’t find them in abundance but you will find them average or below average, which simply means defeating them is more important than taking any takedowns.

You may end your story when you are old

The wall that stands in front of Sifu is also death, or rather the ability to resurrect from the dead before you die, you can unlock a skill and gain an upgrade. However, you age when you come to life again, until you reach old age. Aging can lead to Increasing the damage that will come on Sifu, generally lowering health, and the number of deaths accumulated also adds to the number of years gained with each time your hero dies.

Fortunately, eliminating powerful enemies seems to reduce this counter and there is an unlock that can be fully reset. You are not immortal, and once you have used up all your lives, death is inevitable as Executive Producer Pierre Tarno assured MP1st that many more deaths will be necessary for players to fully understand all the secrets of the game.

Game performance on Playstation platforms

The game is said to run at 60 frames per second on both platforms with the PS5 being able to output 4K resolution. Nothing has been confirmed about support for DualSense features yet, but we can definitely see different types of haptic feedback being used depending on which hits I’ll be making. It’s when we get our hands on Sifu as no more details about that have been revealed yet, so we’ll have to wait.

Those were the juice of some of the impressions we’ve seen lately about Sifu. Do you think we’ll see it properly in February with so many important titles like Dying Light 2 and Elden Eing? Share with us in the comments.
