ASUS TUF Gaming Capture Card

ASUS TUF Gaming Capture Card is an OBS certified 4K capture card designed for streaming and online gaming. Here is our review

Capture cards are a growing market. Aware of the boom of streamers and content creators, the hardware manufacturers have therefore not let themselves be begged and have launched into the creation of products designed to increasingly meet the needs of users. After AVerMedia and Elgato, it is therefore not surprising that ASUS has also launched into the dispute, targeting precisely that slice of customers who have become content creators on YouTube and Twitch.

Thus, was born ASUS TUF Gaming Capture Card: a 4K USB capture card that introduces a series of features designed exclusively for those who play live, alone or in company, to have content to bring to users or to broadcast meetings that are played. on the wire of the milliseconds. This is the only way to explain the support for passthrough up to 240 Hz and the presence of two 3.5 mm audio inputs, one for headphones and one for the controller.

But will the presence of these additions be enough to convince users to change the reference brand? Let’s find out in our review of the ASUS TUF Gaming Capture Card.

Technical features

Don’t be fooled by the promotional images: ASUS TUF Gaming Capture Card is not much bigger than a classic Elgato HD, so much so that it easily fits into the palm of your hand. The specifications are very respectable: in input it supports 4K at 60 Hz, 1440p at 144 Hz and 1080p at 240 Hz, always with active HDR. In recording we find some more limits than some competitors: no HDR and 4K locked at 30 FPS, but the 1440p reaches 60 FPS, while you can record videos at 1080p up to 120 FPS.

In addition, we find an HDMI 2.0 output to transmit the signal to the monitor or main TV, while the double 3.5 mm audio input allows us to capture the voices of our playmates. The RGB lighting is easily combined with the most colorful workstations, while the equipment offers us everything, we need to be immediately ready for action: USB-A to USB-C (3.2) cable complete with a USB-A to USB adapter. C for those who want to connect to the latest laptops; an HDMI 2.0 cable; a 3.5 mm audio cable; and, of course, the Capture Card. Below you will find the technical characteristics of this acquisition card

The design of ASUS TUF Gaming Capture Card focuses on solidity and compactness. The board has an octagonal base with an aluminum chassis that facilitates passive heat dissipation. The LED status bar facilitates the identification of any problems, while the inputs are arranged on the rear for the video (2 HDMI 2.0 ports and one USB-C) and on the front for the two 3.5 mm audio inputs for headset and controller.

The solution chosen by ASUS thus stands out from the competition and introduces a touch of whimsy even in a component that usually remains behind the scenes: the TUF logo and the central groove are a bit reminiscent of the hood of a Need For Speed car and this can only please the Dominic Toretto who is in all of us.

Experience of use

The user experience with ASUS TUF Gaming Capture Card has nothing to envy to the competition. Installation is immediate: the USB cable is connected to the PC and the HDMI cable to the video source and the operating system recognizes everything instantly (it is a UVC device, therefore it does not require external drivers). There is no dedicated software, but we recommend downloading the audio controller and the firmware update manager from the ASUS website, to have the volume levels under control and enable, if necessary, the HDCP. Compatibility with OBS, Streamlabs and Streamyard is not in question however and all works without additional drivers. The dissipation is good, even if you don’t expect a device as cold as the temperatures of these first winter tastes: during prolonged sessions the card emits some heat, which is inevitable given the absence of fans.

Unfortunately, the card does not handle Ultra HD recording at 60 FPS, but otherwise we were satisfied with the quality and input lag, which is practically absent. With Streamyard, the classic limits of the platform in terms of resolution apply, therefore maximum 1080p. Finally, the possibility of managing 120 FPS in 1080p recordings and that of reaching up to 240 FPS in passthrough is excellent: even if the spectators will not see the fluid action as we see it, this possibility removes any limitation to those who play competitive. and it needs every possible frame during its streaming sessions.

No problem with Streamlabs / OBS. We streamed and recorded our video sources, consoles and cameras, with no problems whatsoever.

Audio Controller

One of the peculiarities of this capture card is the presence of two 3.5 mm audio inputs to record party sessions on consoles. Also, in this case we did not encounter any problems and the voices of our companions arrived clear both in the recording and in the headphones.
